Campus-Wide Scare: Initiating a Lockdown to Protect Against Potential Threats

The Challenge
- In July 2023, students and teachers were at Schmidt Elementary School in Hillsborough County, FL, for summer school.
- One July afternoon, a staff member spotted two teenagers outside approaching the building with what looked like a rifle.
- Immediately, the staff member used their CrisisAlert™ badge to activate a campus-wide lockdown. Audio-visual notifications were instantly activated, including strobes placed throughout the entire building, alerting everyone on campus that a lockdown was taking place and to initiate their safety protocols.
The Solution
- As soon as the lockdown was initiated, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office immediately received notification that a lockdown had been initiated at Schmidt Elementary School.
- Law enforcement instantly responded and, within minutes, apprehended the teenagers on the side of the school. They were found with a BB gun, not a rifle. They were taken into custody and the lockdown was lifted.
