Protect Everyone, Everywhere: An Additional Layer of Safety for Lone Workers

The Challenge

On August 16, 2024, Justin Quick, Burkburnett Independent School District’s Technology Facilitator, was working alone in an older gym installing three CAT6 drops.

The building’s air conditioning was not working, and the gym’s temperature had become dangerously hot. Determined to finish the job, Justin continued working while occasionally stepping into the hallway to cool down.

As he leaned over to terminate the final cable, he suddenly became dizzy and collapsed. The extreme heat had left him in a state of shock. He quickly lost normal control of his hands and fingers, making it nearly impossible to use his phone.

The situation was made more dangerous by the environment. The gym is located in a building that few people enter, and the campus experiences very limited cellular service.

The Solution

Despite losing the fine motor skills needed to operate his phone, Justin could easily access his CENTEGIX CrisisAlert™ badge to get help.

The district superintendent was the first to respond and quickly located him inside the gym. Soon after, EMTs, the police chief, and others arrived to assist.

He was transported to the hospital, where medical professionals determined the episode was caused by dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Justin made a full recovery. He believes, without CrisisAlert™, no one would have known that he was in a medical crisis or where to find him.

The Results

The district superintendent was the first to respond and quickly located him inside the gym. Soon after, EMTs, the police chief, and others arrived to assist.

In Burkburnett, there is almost no cell service. Phones show no signal at almost all campuses. While working, I tried to send a text that said, “It has to be 115 in here,” but it never went through. So even if I had been able to move my fingers and get my phone out of my pocket, there’s no guarantee it would have been able to dial out.
